making money through blogging

I started blogging informally back in January of 2008. This has never been a money making endeavor, just something for fun. In March of 2008 I setup a Google Adsense account to serve up ads through my website and blog. Google doesn't pay out until you have reached the 0 USD mark. So, putting ads on my site has reimbursed me for about 50% of my online expenses.. not bad for doing nothing. :)

I'm not quitting my day job, but if the revenue stream negates my online costs, that is great.

Sunrise on Miami Beach

I'm sitting on the beach watching the sun come up. (Yes, Mr. Conscience, I'll go back to jogging in a minute.) I have a job that I love, working for people I respect, making decent money, putting Erika through college, driving (sometimes) my dream Jeep, living in a town I enjoy, blogging from a combo pda/phone that kicks ass.

Life isn't all roses, of course - I need to be a better son, need to call my folks more often, want to see more of this cool city, need to lose a few pounds, etc., etc., but overall, I'm a hell of a happy camper.

These observations come to me as I'm about to get a couple of visits from old friends that I've known and worked with for years. I realized that for the first time in years, I'm not thinking about what I want to do next, what my next step should be. I'm pretty comfortable with where my life is going, the things that I'm doing, and the things I'm not chasing after. Sure, I need some work, but it's just polishing, not major construction.

I'm going to Microsoft today for seminars on SQL Server 2005 database mirroring and clustering. I can still remember how excited I was when I passed my first course en route to my MCSE years and years ago, and now I know a few MS people. I wonder what another five years will bring, what I'll be considering normal. I always look around and think, "Man, these guys are geniuses," but my peers keep changing. I was at a VMware event last week and I was practically giddy that I was able to explain some performance tuning info to another guy, and his face lit up when he realized how he could improve his VMware farm. I'm always surprised when I know more than somebody else, but it's because I keep running after the big guns and trying to learn more from them. At some point in here, I guess I gotta start training other people again and stop hogging all the knowledge, hahaha.

Well, at this particular point, I gotta get my sandy ass up and run again. Later.

Satellite

The Satellite is the bar that I probably frequent the most in town. Whether it’s for a show, or just to grab a couple drinks with some friends, The Satellite always seems like the best option. They have a nice outside patio that is great during the summer, but even in the winter it’s not bad because they have heat lamps scattered around. The bar itself is now non-smoking inside. They have a decent sized stage, and a lot of fairly large bands have come through there. Some of my favorite artists have played at The Satellite, both local bands and national acts. They always have a delicious drink special – my new favorite being the Mango Mojito, which is a normal mojito that uses mango-flavored vodka. It’s usually free to get in, unless there are bands playing – but the music is almost always worth the money. There’s bike racks right outside, and with it’s location on the corner of California and Sierra it makes it a convenient place to stop if you happen to be out bar hopping. -Lauren Randolph
